Liberian Red Cross Assists 243 Fire Victims In Sinkor
Published on February 05, 2010Email To Friend    Print Version

The Liberia National Red Cross Society (LNRCS) has provided relief for 243 people made homeless when fire destroyed their houses on 5th Street in Sinkor.
The LNRCS has provided food items, mattresses, blankets and sanitary supplies to the fire victims who were made homeless Sunday night when fire gutted and destroyed their dwelling homes.
The LNRCS' intervention began Monday when an initial fire assessment was conducted by staffs of the Disaster Management (DM) Department leading to the distribution of relief items.
Liberian Red Cross Secretary General, Daniel S, Clarke said the assistance was the LNRCS initial way of identifying with the plight of the victims to enable them to restart their lives.
He thanked other humanitarian and philanthropic organizations who have come to the aid of the fire victims.
Mr. Clarke also emphasized the need for awareness to be created amongst the larger population about fire prevention.
During the early hours of January 31, fire gutted 18 dwelling houses leaving the victims homeless. According to assessment reports, properties valued at more than US$100,000.00 were destroyed in the incident. Reports say the fire was caused by an unattended candle.
There was no casualty however three blind persons were among the affected population.
Meanwhile, the LNRCS has also expressed gratitude to the Government of Liberia for providing assistance to the fire victims.
The Red Cross thanked the government through the Ministry of Internal Affairs/National Disaster Relief Commission, Ministry of Agriculture, Liberia Refugees, Repatriation and Resettlement Commission (LRRRC) and Bureau of Maritime Affairs for providing relief items for the fire victims.
The Red Cross has also praised the Liberia National Police for providing security protection throughout the exercise.
