A one day general consultative meeting of the West African Examinations Council's office in Liberia has ended at the Firestone Senior High School in Division 44, outside Harbel, with administrators of several selected senior high schools in attendance. The meeting, which was the third in a series of meetings held with authorities of the selected schools, brought together representatives from the LAC School System in Grand Bassa County, the St. Mary and Carroll Catholic High Schools in Sanniquellie and Yekepa, Nimba County, the Mother of Jesus Christ Catholic High School in Dolo Town, Margibi County, and the Len Miller High School in Monrovia, among others. According to Deputy Education Minister for Instruction, Mrs. Hester Williams Catakaw, who chaired the meeting on Thursday, January 28, 2010, Liberia has indicated to the International Body of WAEC that it intends to attempt the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) during the 2011/2012 academic year. The Liberian Deputy Education Minister noted that in the series of meeting already held, participants have been discussing the different road maps that the selected schools need to be on in order to prepare their candidates ahead of the expected international examination. She described the responses from Liberian school authorities as positive; and some of them have indicated to her that they wish to form part of the first batch of schools to sit the Senior School Certificate Examination in Liberia. Mrs. Catakaw said though the new examination would be good for Liberia, it was not void of challenges as there is an urgent need for functional laboratories in the area of the sciences- Biology, Chemistry and Physics, saying that “most of our schools don't have those facilities; so we're giving them time to prepare.” Deputy Minister Catakaw, who is also government's representative to the International Body of WAEC, further spoke of the need for Liberian participating schools to work toward obtaining good and functional library facilities with modern books and halls where the examination would be administered to the students. For his part, the head of WAEC Office in Liberia, Prof. Thomas K. Gaie, noted that his office and the Ministry of Education are encouraging as many schools as possible to form part of the new endeavor for qualitative education and human resource development in Liberia. He reiterated that the minimum requirements for schools are functional laboratories, good library facilities, trained and qualified teachers who are up to the task, and huge capital investment to meet the demands from the minimum standard to the highest standard. Meanwhile, Professor Gaie says Firestone Liberia is on the right path to providing quality education for the young people of Liberia who are the future leaders of the country. Speaking after he and others were led on a guided tour of library and laboratories facilities of the Firestone Liberia Senior High School in Division 44, by the Public Affairs Manager, Mr. G. Rufus Karmorh, the Chief Examiner of WAEC in Liberia, noted that he was impressed and satisfied with what he saw in terms of working materials for teachers. The Liberian educator praised the Management of Firestone Liberia for the level of investment it is making in the area of education for the Liberian children aimed at preparing them for a better future something he said, would enable them to become resourceful and responsible citizens of their country. Firestone's delegation to the meeting was led by its Supervisor of Schools, Mr. Charles G. Massaley; and included the Principal of the Firestone Senior High School, Mr. G. Mulbah Gayflor.
