The African Centre for the Constructive Resolution of Disputes (ACCORD) in collaboration with the Liberia Peace Building Office has launched a major peace building training workshop in Monrovia. The intensive training program which was launched Monday at the Cape Hotel in Mamba Point is expected to last up to Friday, March 5, 2010. The training is sponsored by ACCORD.
Speaking to journalists during the training workshop, the Executive Director of the Liberia Peace Building Office, Wilfred N. Gray-Johnson disclosed that the program brought together a cross section of participants from key regions in Liberia. He noted the participants will undergo intensive peace building training.
Gray-Johnson furthered noted that the week-long training exercise is aimed at enhancing the skill-set of various Actors involved in peace building process in the Country. He added that the training is also set to promote coherence and coordination among the various stakeholders. “This training will provide more experiences that would enhance the understanding of peace building, which will further complement participants' peace building efforts in our society”, the Executive Director Noted.
According to Gray-Johnson participants are expected to learn more about understanding conflict and conflict phases, conflict analyses (Liberia case study), natural resource management and conflict as well as regional peace building. He added amongst other things that governance and the rule of law and peace building, gender and peace building and actors in peace building are key issues expected to be studied during the South African based ACCORD sponsored training.
After 14 years of civil conflict that brought the Country to its knees couple with the subsequent election of a democratic president Madam Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Liberia is still face with a fragile peace. Despite the presence of United Nations troop in the country, many citizens have embrace violence or mob action as a faster means of getting redress. With the currently establishment of the Liberia Peace Building Office at the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Liberians are of the hope that the nation would understand the importance of peace once more.
The Liberia 's Peace Building Priority Plan was done and finalized in February 2008. The Plan received US$ 15 million allocation for specific interventions in three priority areas. The areas include, Fostering National Reconciliation and Conflict Management, Critical Interventions to Promote Peace and Resolve Conflict as well as Strengthening State Capacity for Peace Consolidation
The Priority Plan also considered the Liberia Poverty Reduction Strategy (PRS 2008-2011) which was being completed, but highlighted the national interest in catalytic support from the PBF.
However, the sponsored for the five days training is the African Centre for the Constructive Resolution of Disputes (ACCORD). The organization is a South African-based civil society team working throughout Africa to bring creative African solutions to the challenges posed by conflict on the continent.
ACCORD's primary aim is to influence political developments by bringing conflict resolution, dialogue and institutional development to the forefront as an alternative to armed violence and protracted conflict. ACCORD specializes amongst other things, in conflict management, analysis and prevention and intervenes in conflicts through mediation, negotiation, training, and research and conflict analysis.
