Govt. Reinforces Rehab Of Harper- Fish Town Rd -As Ghanaian Firm Replaces Ivoirian's
Published on July 14, 2010Email To Friend    Print Version

Rehabilitation work has begun on the Harper-Fish Town road after an Ivorian construction company, M-Thinet, was ordered by county authority to cease the road rehabilitation earlier.
The resumption of the work by a Ghana-based construction firm, SSF, comes following a new deal. SSF is to complete the road project started by M-Thinet and is expected to operate portion of the US$800,000.00 that was being used by the Ivorian firm.
Funds for the projected are from an African Development Bank (ADB) grant of US$ 24 million.
Maryland County Superintendent J. Gblebo Browne told reporters that the ADB has three components of the US$24 million grant including the construction of the main roads, rehabilitation of feeder roads, and social infrastructure.
According to him, International Labour Organization (ILO) is doing the feeder roads and has contracted the services of companies to target areas such as potholes, critical spots and bridges.
Recently, a delegation from the ADB and Public Works carried out a pre-bid inspection of the roads which the Superintendent claimed is divided into Blocks A and B.
He pointed out that Block A has to do with the road leading from Harper to River-Gee Bridge, while Block B includes the bridge from River Gee to the county's capital city, Fishtown.
There are reports that the bidding process that will pave the way for the rehabilitation and pavement of the road has already begun as actual work is expected to begin at the end of this month, July.
According to Supt. Browne, the social component has to do with the construction of schools and health centers.
A joint monitoring group comprising the county's Superintendent, ministries of Health and Education, Liberia Agency for Community Empowerment (LACE) and other line ministries recently inspected schools and clinics presently under construction in the county.
