 Delegates at the just ended sub-regional conference on the establishment of a National Youth Volunteer Schemes in the Mano River Union (MRU) have recommended the establishment of an effective sensitization program to inculcate a sense of patriotism among youth in the sub-region for effective engagement in the development process. They said the current structure of the National Youth Volunteer Service (NYVS) managed by the Ministry of Youth and Sports should be maintained and strengthened through the provision of annual budgetary support by the government. Participants also stressed the need for strong political will on the part of government and a legal framework that will govern the NYVS programme. |

UN Envoy Ellen Margrethe Løj has stressed the importance of women’s participation in peacekeeping and called on troop and police contributing countries to follow Ghana’s example, whilst urging that country to do even better. Ms. Løj made this call when she awarded UN peacekeeping medals to 37 members of the Ghana Police Contingent serving with the UN Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) for their “remarkable contribution in restoring peace, the rule of law, and the process of consolidating State authority in Liberia”. The contingent comprised 26 Police, 8 Corrections and 3 Immigration officers, eleven of whom are women. |
